Human activities provide food, shelter, manufactured goods, minerals and mobility, but also place substantial pressure on climate, ecosystems, freshwater and human health. This review examines the environmental effects of agriculture, housing and construction, industry, mining and transportation through their principal pathways: greenhouse-gas emissions, land-cover change, soil degradation, water use and contamination, air pollution, waste and biodiversity loss. A narrative synthesis of major international assessments and institutional literature was used, with emphasis on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Health Organization. The evidence indicates that impacts are interconnected: housing demand stimulates material extraction and industrial production; transport infrastructure changes land use and access; agricultural supply chains depend on energy and logistics; and mining can create persistent landscape and water risks while supplying materials used by other sectors. The paper compares sector-specific pressures and discusses responses including soil and nutrient management, compact urban planning, low-carbon construction, cleaner industrial production, responsible mineral governance, public transport, electrification and circular resource use. It argues that durable environmental improvement requires life-cycle assessment, cumulative-impact management, transparent monitoring and equitable participation. This is a literature-based review and does not report new field experiments or a quantitative meta-analysis.
