This study examines the survival and resilience strategies developed by internally displaced women in Goma in response to the social and economic difficulties associated with forced displacement. The findings show that these women do not merely depend on humanitarian assistance; rather, they mobilize their skills, previous experiences, social networks, and physical strength to engage in various income generating activities. These activities include small – scale trade, domestic work, service provision, urban begging and, for some women, prostitution. Although these activities are often precarious and poorly paid, they contribute to meeting the basic needs of households and strengthen women’s capacity to adapt to the constraints associated with displacement. Their economic involvement also contributes to a gradual transformation of gender relations within households by enhancing women’s autonomy and their participation in household support. However, their resilience remains constrained by a difficult social and economic environment characterized by precarious employment, unstable incomes, and various forms of vulnerability. The study therefore highlights the active role of internally displaced women in ensuring household survival and resilience, despite the structural constraints they continue to face.
